Andrea Mantegna · Adoration of the Magi, 1500
Mantegna painted this on linen in distemper, a fragile technique that leaves the surface matt and chalky rather than glossy, and it has survived remarkably well. The kings present porcelain and agate vessels that would have been the rarest luxury objects imaginable to the picture's first owners.
