Claude Monet · The Magpie, 1868–69
A single magpie on a gate in deep snow, and almost nothing else. Monet was twenty-eight and the picture was rejected by the Salon. The snow is not painted white: it is blue, lilac and pale yellow, which is the observation the jury could not accept and which became the whole basis of Impressionism.
