Eric Ravilious · Halstead Road in Snow, 1935
Snow falls in neat white dots over a road on the edge of Halstead in Essex, and the wheel tracks curve away in pale ribbons. Ravilious was living a few miles away at Castle Hedingham when he painted it, and he builds the whole scene from pattern, flakes, branches and ruts, in a way that owes as much to his wood engraving as to watercolour.
