Fra Angelico · Christ Glorified in the Court of Heaven (detail), 1423–24
A detail from a large altarpiece panel, with ranks of angels and saints arranged in bands. Fra Angelico organised these crowds by colour rather than by rank, so the eye reads them as pattern first. The blue was ground from lapis lazuli and was the most expensive pigment in the workshop.
