Fra Angelico · Madonna of Humility, 1440
The Virgin seated on the ground rather than on a throne, which is what humility means in the title and was a recognised type in its own right. Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar as well as a painter, and the gold here is not decoration but the standard ground for a devotional panel.
