Gustave Courbet · Deer Running in the Snow, 1856–57
Deer moving through snow in a French forest, painted by a man who hunted and knew how the animals actually run. Courbet insisted on painting only what he could see, and refused commissions for angels on the grounds that he had never met one. The snow here is built up thickly with a palette knife.
