Jessie Willcox Smith · He Spoke Not a Word, But Went Straight to his Work, c.1912

Santa, in brown fur and standing on a green stool, fills the stockings from an overflowing sack. Jessie Willcox Smith drew it for a 1912 edition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. The title is the poem's own line, and she takes it literally: his back is turned and he is entirely absorbed in the job.
