Matteo di Giovanni · Madonna and Child with Angels and Cherubim, 1465
Cherubim are the second-highest rank of angel and were conventionally painted red, which is why the heads crowding this panel are that colour. Matteo di Giovanni worked in Siena, where the taste for gold ground and sharp linear drawing outlasted the Florentine turn to perspective by several decades.
