Pieter Bruegel the Elder · The Hunters in the Snow, 1565
Hunters coming home with one fox between them, past a row of exhausted dogs, while the valley below carries on skating. It belongs to a series on the months of the year. Bruegel sets the trees as a row of diagonals that pull the eye down the slope and out over the ice in a single movement.
