Simon Marmion · A Choir of Angels (detail), 1459
Part of a much larger panel, showing angels singing from a shared sheet. Marmion worked in Valenciennes as an illuminator as well as a painter, and the scale of a manuscript page is still visible here in the small brushwork and the density of gold. The wings are painted feather by feather.
