Abbott Handerson Thayer · Angel, 1889
Thayer used his own children as models for a series of winged figures, and made no attempt to disguise them as anything but children with wings attached. He was also a working naturalist: he worked out how countershading hides an animal against its background, and published the book that led armies to camouflage.
