Albert Edelfelt · Boys Playing on the Shore, 1884
Boys on the shore at Haikko, painted outdoors in the Finnish summer light that barely dims. Edelfelt has kept the horizon high and the water taken up two-thirds of the picture, so the figures sit low and small. The wet stones in the foreground get the most careful painting in the whole thing.
