Albert Edelfelt · Good Friends (Portrait of the Artist’s Sister Bertha Edelfelt), 1881
Edelfelt's sister Bertha with a dog, painted outdoors in the pale, even light of a Finnish summer. The picture belongs to the moment when Nordic painters were bringing French plein-air method home: the handling is loose and the tonal range narrow, but the drawing underneath stays firm and academic.
