Albert Edelfelt · Queen Bianca, 1877
Blanche of Namur bounces her small son on her knee, caught at the top of the lift where he is weightless and she is laughing. Edelfelt was painting a medieval queen, but he dressed the moment in the ordinary warmth of a Finnish parlour. The gold ground and the arched frame borrow from devotional painting, quietly making a domestic game into an altarpiece.
