Albrecht Dürer · Self Portrait at the Age of Twenty Eight, 1500
Dürer painted himself square to the front, one hand raised to the fur at his collar, in the frontal pose reserved at the time for images of Christ. No other secular portrait of the period does this. The inscription beside his head states his age and that he made it with undying colours.
