Alexandre Cabanel · Albaydé, 1848
A subject taken from Victor Hugo's poems of the East, painted when French artists were making a whole genre out of an imagined Orient. What holds it is the paint handling rather than the story: the transparent shadow across the face, and the way the fabric is built up in thin, dragged layers.
