Ambrosius Bosschaert · Bouquet of Flowers on a Ledge, 1619–20
This bouquet could never have stood in a vase. Bosschaert painted flowers that bloom months apart, working from studies made across a whole year and assembling them into one arrangement. The shell and the insects on the ledge are painted at the same microscopic pitch as the petals.
