Amedeo Modigliani · Nude Sitting on a Divan, 1917
The pose is classical and the treatment is not. Modigliani stretches the neck and the torso, tips the head, and paints the whole figure in warm oranges against a dark ground so the body reads as a single continuous shape. The features are cut back to almond eyes and a narrow nose, taken from the carved heads he had made before he returned to painting.
