August Macke · Russian Ballet I, 1912
Macke was painting the Ballets Russes, which had reached Germany and made a considerable noise. He breaks the theatre into flat planes of strong colour, keeps the dancers as simplified shapes, and lets the audience in the foreground become a row of dark silhouettes. Two years later he was killed in the first autumn of the war.
