Bernat Martorell · Saint George and the Dragon, 1434–35
Catalan Gothic painting on panel, with gold ground and a dragon rendered as a specific, scaly animal rather than a symbol. Martorell fills the bottom of the picture with the bones of everything the dragon has already eaten, and puts the rescued princess at the side, waiting, as if the event were routine.
