A mother watches a sleeping baby through gauze, and the gauze is the subject: Morisot paints the net of the cradle as a thin veil laid over the whole right side of the picture. The sitter is her own sister Edma, who had given up painting when she married. It hung in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.
