Claude Monet · Impression, Sunrise, 1872
This is the picture that named the movement. A critic reviewing the 1874 exhibition seized on its title to mock the whole group as impressionists, and the insult stuck as the label. It is Le Havre harbour at dawn, painted thinly and fast, with the orange sun sitting at exactly the same brightness as the grey around it.
