Diego Velázquez · The Rokeby Venus, 1647–51
In 1914 a suffragette walked into the National Gallery with a meat cleaver and slashed this canvas several times, in protest at the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst. The repairs are invisible now. Velázquez has used the mirror to show the face, badly focused, while the body stays turned away.
