Edgar Degas · Café-Concert at Les Ambassadeurs, 1876–77
Pastel over a monotype base, which is why the darks are so dense. Degas puts you below the stage looking up past the necks of the double basses, with the singer lit from underneath by the footlights so her gestures throw shadows upward. The audience is a few strokes of hat and shoulder.
