Edgar Degas · Dancer in Front of a Window, 1874–77
Pastel over a rough, rubbed ground, worked in layers until the colour sits on the surface like dust. Degas has placed the dancer against the light of the window rather than in front of it, so the figure goes dark and the room dissolves into glare. He drew dancers for forty years, mostly at rest, adjusting a strap or standing still.
