Edgar Degas · The Absinthe Drinker, 1875–76
A woman and a man at a café table, not talking, with a glass of absinthe in front of her. The models were an actress and an engraver, both friends of Degas, and neither was a drinker. When it was shown in London in 1893 it was attacked as a lesson in degradation.
