Edgar Degas · The Ballet Class, 1871–74
The old man with the stick is Jules Perrot, a real ballet master, brought into a class that Degas assembled from separate studies rather than watched in one go. The dancers who are not being looked at are the interesting ones: scratching, adjusting, leaning on the piano. The floor runs away steeply to the left and takes the eye with it.
