Edmund Blair Leighton · A Favour, 1898
A young woman ties a ribbon to a kneeling knight's arm, a favour to be carried into the tournament. Leighton was painting in 1898 about a Middle Ages that had never quite existed, with the costume researched and the sentiment invented. The garden wall, the stone bench and the hem of her dress get the same crisp finish as the armour.
