Edvard Munch · Madonna, 1895–96
Munch made this subject in paint and again in lithograph, and the print version surrounds the figure with a border of swimming sperm and a foetus in the corner, which tells you plainly what he meant by the title. The painted version keeps the closed eyes, the thrown-back head, and the red halo.
