Eric Ravilious · Drought, 1933
Cracked ground and a hard light, handled with the brush kept deliberately short of water so the colour skips across the paper. Ravilious built his pictures out of repeated marks — furrows, palings, ruts — rather than out of atmosphere, which is why they hold their shape at any size.
