Eric Ravilious · The Lifeboat, 1938
A lifeboat, drawn with the working detail Ravilious gave to any well-made machine: the hull planking, the davits, the rigging. He was fascinated by boats as objects rather than as subjects of drama, and painted them at rest, hauled up, waiting for something that has not happened.
