Eric Ravilious · Wiltshire Landscape, 1937
Ravilious worked in watercolour with a dry brush, dragging colour across the paper so the white grain shows through and the chalk downs come out bleached and wind-scoured. There is almost no sky weather here and no figure: the fences, furrows and hurdles carry the whole sense of distance. He was thirty-four, and five years from the flight over Iceland he never returned from.
