George Stubbs · Whistlejacket, 1762
A horse, life-size, and nothing else. No rider, no saddle, no landscape, and no explanation of what the animal is standing on. Stubbs had spent eighteen months dissecting horses and publishing the anatomy, which is why the muscle under the skin is exact. The bare ground was almost certainly the plan, not an abandoned background.
