George Wesley Bellows · Love of Winter, 1914
Snow in a city park, painted with a loaded brush and a lot of white, with the figures skating and sliding treated as dark punctuation. Bellows was one of the American painters who took ordinary urban life as a subject, and the picture is built for energy rather than for finish.
