Georges Seurat · A Sunday on La Grande Jatte 1884, 1884
Seurat spent two years on this, building the whole surface from separate dots of unmixed colour on the theory that the eye would blend them more brightly than the palette could. The result is a Sunday crowd holding poses as stiff as Egyptian relief. There is a monkey on a lead at the right.
