Grant Wood · American Gothic, 1930
The models were the painter's sister and his dentist, posed separately, and the house is a small wooden farmhouse in Eldon, Iowa with an oddly grand Gothic window that Wood had noticed and liked. He always denied it was a joke at the sitters' expense. Iowa disagreed, loudly, when it was first shown.
