Gustav Klimt · Fulfilment (The Embrace), 1905
This is a working cartoon rather than a finished painting: a full-size design for the mosaic frieze Klimt made for a Brussels townhouse, drawn in pencil, watercolour and gold paint on paper. The spirals and staring eyes in the robes were meant to be executed in marble, enamel and semi-precious stone. Look at the two faces and you find the same embrace he would return to in The Kiss.
