Gustav Klimt · The Kiss, 1907–08
Klimt worked gold leaf into oil paint here, a technique he took from the Byzantine mosaics he had seen in Ravenna. The couple kneel on a patch of flowered ground that ends abruptly, with nothing beyond it. The ornament is what tells them apart: rectangles in his robe, circles in hers. Austria's state gallery bought the painting in 1908, before he had finished it.
