Gustave Caillebotte · The Floor Planers, 1875
Three men on their knees scraping a parquet floor, stripped to the waist, in an empty Paris apartment. The Salon rejected it, apparently uneasy at working men shown this plainly. Caillebotte, who had money and trained as an engineer, painted the light on the bare boards with the precision of a draughtsman.
