Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec · La Goulue Arriving at the Moulin Rouge with Two Women, 1892
La Goulue was the Moulin Rouge's biggest draw and Lautrec drew her constantly. Here she arrives rather than performs, flanked by two women, chin up, walking through a room that is already watching her. The oil is thinned onto board and the bare surface carries the mid-tones, which is why the picture moves at the speed of a drawing.
