Henri Rousseau · Surprised!, 1891
Rousseau's first jungle picture, and he never left France to paint any of them. The plants come from the hothouses of the Paris botanical gardens, enlarged; the tiger comes from illustrations. Slanting lines of rain are laid straight over the whole canvas, which no trained painter would have done, and which is why the storm works.
