J. M. W. Turner · Mortlake Terrace, 1827
A summer terrace above the Thames, painted into the low glare of the sun so the far bank dissolves. The famous part is the dog on the parapet: it is a small piece of black paper, cut out and stuck onto the surface, reportedly added at the last minute while the picture was hanging at the Academy.
