Venice dissolved into light on water, with the buildings held together by the faintest drawing underneath a great deal of thin, luminous colour. Turner visited Venice three times and painted it largely from memory and watercolour notes afterwards, which is part of why the city in his pictures is more atmosphere than architecture.
