James McNeill Whistler · Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (Portrait of the Artist's Mother), 1871
The title Whistler gave it was Arrangement in Grey and Black, and he meant it: a composition of rectangles, a dark shape, a pale curtain, a strip of dado. His mother sat for it, reportedly because another model failed to arrive. He was insistent that who she was should not matter to anyone looking at it, which is the one instruction nobody has ever followed.
