Joaquín Sorolla · Children on the Beach, Valencia, 1916
Sorolla painted outdoors on the Valencian coast, working quickly and large, chasing the particular hard glare of Mediterranean light on wet skin and wet sand. The shadows are violet rather than grey, the water is scraped on in long horizontal strokes, and the horizon is pushed almost out of the frame so the picture is nearly all beach.
