Johannes Vermeer · Girl with a Pearl Earring, 1665
Not a portrait of anyone in particular. This is a tronie, a study of a type or a costume, which is why the turban is exotic and the background is nothing but dark. The pearl is two strokes of white and a soft grey reflection, and if you measure it against her jaw it is far too large to be a real one.
