John Atkinson Grimshaw · Evening Glow, 1884
Grimshaw painted wet roads at dusk almost exclusively, and the whole effect rests on reflection: lamplight and last daylight coming back up off the road surface. The trees are picked out leaf by leaf against the sky. Whistler said he had thought himself the inventor of nocturnes until he saw Grimshaw's moonlights.
