John Collier · Lady Godiva, 1897
The legend has Godiva ride through Coventry naked so her husband would lift a tax, with the townspeople keeping indoors. Collier paints the moment as an ordeal rather than a display: the head is down, the horse is walking, and the streets around her are completely empty.
