John Constable · Clouds, 1822
A cloud study and nothing else: no ground, no horizon, no subject. Constable made dozens of these on Hampstead Heath, dating them on the back with the time of day and the wind direction, because he believed the sky was the organ of sentiment in a landscape and wanted it right.
