John Constable · Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds, 1825
Commissioned by the bishop, who is the small figure pointing out the spire to his wife at the bottom left. Constable framed the cathedral in an arch of trees and then put a heavy cloud behind it, which the bishop disliked enough to ask for a sunnier version. The cows and the water meadow are as carefully studied as the building.
